Actor/Director/Choreographer
Denise Johnson is a professional musical theatre performer, director and choreographer. She is an active member of the New York/Broadway theatre community and is very involved in workshopping new, up and coming musicals. Favorite credits include Hairspray, The Last Five Years, Legally Blonde, 42nd Street, Anything Goes and The Music Man. She was last seen in the 25th Anniversary production of Crazy For You at Lincoln Center, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman. Denise has worked extensively in New York and around the country at various theatres including Lincoln Center, The York Theatre Company, The Public Theatre, Second Stage Theatre, New World Stages, Ars Nova, Paper Mill Playhouse, Goodspeed Opera, The North Carolina Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, Flat Rock Playhouse, Signature Theatre, Houston TUTS, and St. Louis MUNY. She was a featured performer for Walt Disney World, Spirit Cruises, Paramount’s Carowinds and The Gatlin Brothers. She has also lead original stage shows at The Crook and Chase Theatre, was a regular performer on TNN's "Crook and Chase" TV show and was a back-up vocalist for Curb Records recording artist Ronnie McDowell. Denise has been known as one of the top choreographers and show designers for competitive show choirs around the country. Her work has earned her over 200 National Championships, Grand Championships, Best Show Design and Best Choreography awards. Her groups have consistently been in the top 10 in the U.S. and were the inspiration for the popular TV show GLEE. Denise is a frequent guest artist, teaching at Elon University, Millikin University, University of Nebraska, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Heidelberg University, William Peace University, Vandercook College of Music, North Carolina Summer Institute in Choral Art, Southeastern Theatre Conference and Show Choir Camps of America. Denise splits her time between NYC and Greensboro, NC where she teaches in the nationally renowned Theatre Department at Greensboro Day School. She continues to be in high demand as an adjudicator for competitions and a teaching artist for workshops and camps.
