As an Artistic Producing Director and Professor at Emory University in Atlanta since 1989, Vincent Murphy has been – an artistic producing director of three national theaters, with a professional career of collaboration on more than 200 productions in the US, Canada, South America, and Europe. As a director, playwright, actor, designer, choreographer, and artistic director, he has garnered more than forty major award in directing, playwriting, teaching, and acting –working at several leading regional theaters in the United States, including The American Repertory Theatre, The Alliance Theatre, and The Actors Theatre of Louisville. At Theater Emory, he developed a biennial Brave New Works series for locally, nationally, and internationally wr i t e r s including Wole Soyinka, Naomi Wallace, David Kranes, Robert Schenkkan, Robert O'Hara and Elizabeth Wong.
The University Of Michigan Press published his book on adaptation for the theater, PAGE TO STAGE: THE CRAFT OF ADAPTATION, in 2013. He has conducted workshops on his book at several universities and play labs across the USA,Canada and Europe.Originally, he used the book to teach upper level liberal arts students at Tufts/UMass/Simon Fraser and with pros how think and work broadly as a theater artists in approaching the creation of a new work. This works great is a semester long project. Now in the Introduction to Theater class he teaches he has found getting introduction students to do basic research into what stories or blogs or letters or literature matters to them is a great way to open them up to big questions about their lives, theater structure and the creation of art.
